Elder and Deacon Officer Nomination Form

1. To make a nomination, you and your candidate must be a member of Flatrock Community Church.

2. Confirm that the candidate meets the qualifications for the office: calling, character, competency, compatibility and comprehension.

Calling: Calling is both inward and outward. A candidate should desire to serve and be recognized by others as possessing the gifts and graces necessary for the task.

Character: Though no leader can expect to be perfect, he must be exemplary, modeling in a consistent way the character of Christ.

Competency: God calls elders and deacons to serve in distinct and varying ways. A candidate should evidence the inclination and ability to fulfill that particular biblical role.

Compatibility: Candidates need to understand and fit into Flatrock’s life and vision.

Comprehension: Candidates need to understand and accept Flatrock’s convictions about theology and church government. This involves commitment to the Bible's authority, to Presbyterian Church government, and to the Westminster standards.

Elders should possess the following characteristics:
- Self-controlled
- Hospitable
- Able to teach
- Not violent but gentle
- Not quarrelsome
- Not a lover of money
- Not a recent covert
- Has a good reputation with outsiders
- Not overbearing
- Not quick-tempered
- Loves what is good
- Upright, holy
- Disciplined
- Above reproach: blameless
- Husband of one wife
- Temperate
- Respectable
- Not given to drunkenness
- Manages his own family well
- Sees that his children obey him
- Does not pursue dishonest gain
- Keeps hold of the deep truths
- Sincere
- Tested

Deacons should possess the following characteristics:
- Above reproach: blameless
- Husband of one wife
- Temperate
- Respectable
- Not given to drunkenness
- Manages his own family well
- Sees that his children obey him
- Does not pursue dishonest gain

1. Pray and carefully consider the Flatrock men you wish to nominate for ruling elder and deacon. You are not required to nominate. If you wish to, please nominate up to three people (it is acceptable to nominate less than three).

2. Ask J if you have any questions or need further help with distinctions between deacon and elder.

3. Nominees can accept or decline their nomination. If accepted they will undergo officer training.

4. Upon completion of training, Flatrock will hold a congregational meeting where all communing members in good standing are entitled to vote in the election of church officers.
